Dash cam captures chase

A Kelowna man is sharing his story of being caught in the middle of a police chase.

Joerg Klaemt and his wife were headed north to Salmon Arm on Glenmore Road, Wednesday, when they were stopped by traffic near the landfill.

When he realized traffic wasn't moving, Klaemt decided to turn around in the dog park parking lot and head back toward Kelowna. As he headed back into the city, he was forced to pull over as multiple police cars rushed past.

Klaemt decided he would turn left on Scenic Road and continue out to Highway 97, so he could continue north. But, as he nears Scenic, a police officer pulls over near the centre line and throws what appears to be a spike belt behind his car as he drove past.

As Klaemt moved into the turning lane at Scenic and Glenmore, he was rear-ended by the suspect. The driver then took off and continued heading south, with police in hot pursuit.

Klaemt and his wife were in shock and say police on the scene didn't care that he was struck and just wanted him to move along.

Initially, the couple didn't feel like they were hurt, so they continued on their journey. But, by the time they reached Vernon, pain was setting in. They went to the emergency room at the Vernon Jubilee Hospital.

The Klaemts are sore today and dealing with ICBC to repair damage to their vehicle.

Klaemt feels, given the amount of officers on scene, police could have done a better job blocking the suspect when he was further north on Glenmore.

You can watch his experience on dash cam footage he submitted to Castanet.
