Increased smoke anticipated

If you notice increased smoke around Shelter Cove today, emergency officials say there is no need to worry.

People living in Shelter Cove and surrounding areas may notice some increased smoke starting today as a result of proactive burning operations.

“These burning operations will take place in a controlled environment within the fire’s perimeter to remove unburnt fuels from the area and decrease the chance of the fire breaching containment lines,” explains fire information officer Jordan Turner.

He adds that due to the hard work of crews and recent precipitation, the Shelter Cove wildfire is now 85 per cent contained.

“Today, crews will continue to mop up hot spots along the perimeter,” adds Turner. “An area restriction put in place for areas around this wildfire to protect the safety of firefighting personnel and the public remains in place.”

For the safety of crews, members of the public are asked to stay out of the fire-affected area as an area restriction has been issued.

To report a wildfire or open burning violation, call 1 800 663-5555 toll-free or *5555 on a cellphone.
