Toaster smokes out residents

Residents of a multi-unit retirement living building on Brown Road were evacuated from their homes after fire alarms starting ringing at 5 a.m.

Fire crews responded and discovered a unit filled with smoke, that had been coming from a toaster. Jason Brolund, fire chief for West Kelowna, says firefighters helped to evacuate the residents and used fans to ventilate the smoke.

"With the co-operation of staff from the building, residents were comforted on the first floor and allowed to return to their suites within an hour."

The cause of the fire was deemed accidental.

While the evacuation went smoothly, Brolund reminds residents, owners and managers of apartment buildings to conduct and participate in regular fire drills.

"When you hear alarms ringing, it means you must leave the building for your safety,” he explains.
