Wildfire near Oliver

UPDATE 10:20 a.m.

The Willowbrook fire is now 82 hectares in size and 80 per cent contained, according to fire information officer Kayla Pepper.

There are four forestry firefighters on site, as well as heavy equipment. The Willowbrook Fire Department has also assisted.

The fire is approximately five kilometres northwest of Oliver, and no structures are threatened, according to Pepper.

It is suspected to be a lightning caused fire.

Yet another wildfire has broken out in the Okanagan, this time near Oliver.

The Willowbrook fire is five kilometres north west of Oliver and is currently 12 hectares in size.

Kelsey Winter, Fire Information Officer with the Kamloops Fire District, said the fire is moving at a moderate rate of spread and the Willowbrook Fire Department is on site.

“Tankers are trying action it, but it is nearly impossible with the wind,” Winter said of the high wind that is creating problems for fire crews from one end of the Valley to the other. “They have been grounded right now for safety reasons.”

Winter said no structures are currently threatened by the latest blaze and air tankers are standing by should the winds die down.

Winter said the Willowbrook fire is “definitely concerning” right now because of the wind and its proximity to Oliver, and crews are doing their best to “action all the fires they can.”
