Derailment in New West

UPDATE 11:15 a.m.

Southern Railway says there is no cause for concern after a train derailed in New Westminster.

The company says the locomotive slid off the track when it went over a broken rail along Front Street about 3:30 a.m.

It says the train wasn't going very fast and didn't tip over, nor did the 20 rail cars behind it.

Crews spent several hours getting the train back on track and, as a result ,Front Street was entirely closed to traffic.

Southern Railway is a major freight transporter in the Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley, serving shippers of automobile, forest, building, agricultural, chemical and steel products.

No one was hurt in the incident.

Southern Railway crews are dealing with a derailed train in New Westminster.

Police say it happened about 4:30 a.m. this morning on the 300 block of Front Street, where the tracks cross the road.

All of Front Street is closed to traffic until further notice.

Police did not immediately provide details on the seriousness of the derailment or what cargo the train was carrying.

The company did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
