Skynet is rising

Skynet is rising – at least that's what the Internet is saying after one women's tweet went viral.

On June 29, a factory technician was killed by a robot at the Volkswagen plant outside of Kassel, Germany.

Shortly after the tragedy, a woman named Sarah O'Connor broke the news on Twitter

O'Connor broke the news that a machine had killed a human, which set off a Twitter meltdown over the impending rise of Skynet, the killer, self-aware defence network of Terminator movie franchise fame.

Linda Hamilton played the role of Sarah Conner in the films, alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger's classic Terminator robot character.

O'Connor tweeted: “A robot has killed a worker in a VW plant in Germany.”

The Internet replied with:

O'Connor herself was clearly overwhelmed by all the attention.

She is a Financial Times employment correspondent, according to her Twitter account, and quickly commented she should have realized what would happen before she sent out the first tweet.

While many chose just to focus on the fact her name is similar to the movie character's, others chastised the Terminator fans for not noticing that her name is different – and that a person had actually died.

According to reports, the man died Monday at the plant in Baunatal, about 100 kilometres north of Frankfurt. The 22-year-old man was part of a team that was setting up the stationary robot when it grabbed and crushed him against a metal plate.

Initial reports from the company say human error was to blame and that it was not a problem with the robot itself.
