Flag replaces tree

When Vernon’s Canterbury Court Seniors Residence had to remove a majestic maple tree in front of the building because it was causing problems with underground services, several residents were upset over the loss.

But the replacement for the tree had them singing loudly Tuesday.

A day ahead of Canada Day, a 40-foot flag pole was erected to replace the tree. An official flag raising ceremony saw dozens of residents gathered outside in 30-plus C degree heat and break into a spontaneous singing of O Canada.

“It’s great to see. It tells everybody we belong,” said resident Tom Simper. “I sure like to see this flag pole go up to replace that tree.”

Canterbury Court manager Delene Demeter recited The Maple Leaf Forever, while the facilities resident-of-the-year Kay Kallaste presented senior activity co-ordinator Julie Hartland with a new flag for the pole.

Country Singer Lee Dinwoodie then led the crowd in the official singing of the national anthem
