Kids not active: survey

Many Canadian parents feel their children don't get enough physical activity, according to a recent study by the YMCA.

The study found 35 per cent of parents surveyed think their child, aged six to 12, is not physically active enough, and only 42 per cent said their child gets the recommended seven hours of physical activity per week.

“Children between the ages of six and 12 are at an important stage of their development, and this is a key time for instilling healthy behaviour and habits,” said Sharon Peterson, CEO of YMCA Okanagan, in a news release.

The study also found that 54 per cent of parents do not have the time or money for programs and services that promote active living.

On Sunday, the YMCA will be celebrating Healthy Kids Day, a national event to improve the health of Canadian children. The Kelowna event will include live entertainment, free activities and giant inflatables for kids to play on.

The event will run from noon to 4 p.m. at the Kelowna Family Y.
