Disc golf taking flight

The Kelowna Disc Golf Association is hoping to take over a portion of Knox Mountain Park for its growing sport.

A staff report prepared for Monday's council meeting suggests the association be awarded a licence of occupation for the area bordering Poplar Point Drive for the next three years.

The association would have an option to renew for an additional three years.

The course on city-owned lands at the base of Knox Mountain was originally installed in 2003, however, with the recent growth of the sport the association would like to make improvements.

Prior to any work, a formal agreement must be reached with the city.

In the report, staff noted any infrastructure improvements are temporary and could be easily removed in the event the course is no longer active.

The course encompasses three city lots and, according to staff, does not conflict with short-term planning goals for Knox Mountain.

The Kelowna Disc Golf Association currently has between 40 and 50 members.

The property supports three separate nine-hole courses.

Disc golf is a variation of traditional golf in which a player attempts to throw a frisbee-type disc into a target.

As with golf, you win by completing the course in the fewest number of throws.
