Extreme summer camps

Pali Adventures Summer Camp

While you may have enjoyed good ol' traditional summer camps with tents, swimming and s'mores, kids today have so many options that are way cooler.

From swimming with the sharks, to hanging at NASA and learning to be a James Bond-esque spy, if you’ve got the cash, your kids can have the summer of their lives.

Is your kid Brad Pitt’s next stunt double? Perhaps Hollywood Stunt Camp is up their alley.

At the California-based camp called Pali Adventures, professional stuntmen teach your kids all the tips and tricks of the action trade, like how to jump off of buildings, do parkour and swordplay – the usual.

It costs $1,945 for one week or $3,600 for two.

If your kid is sick of searching Okanagan Lake for Ogopogo, they might want to try swimming with sharks for a change.

The stunning looking global summer educational Broadreach program brings high school students to Fiji for 24 days, for the Fiji Shark Studies program.

The camp focuses on shark conservation while students get to scuba dive with silver tip and bull sharks.

The tropical fantasy trip costs $6,580 per student.

If your kids are more of the tech-savy, play video games inside all day and ignore the outdoors type – Coding and Apple Camps might be more up their alley.

At Coding Camp, kids can learn about programming and robotics at science-focused TechKnowHow.

Kids can spend the summer taking, for example, a "Game Design Coding Camp" to create their own 2-D action video game.

The camps cost between $225 and $495 per week, plus the cost of getting to California, of course.

At Apple camp, kids can head to the nearest Apple retail store and learn the world of iPhones, iPods and all things Apple while crafting their own interactive books. Enrolment for the program is free, but it is only offered in the U.S.

If there is a speed demon in your life, Race Car Camp might be just for them. The price to get your kid NASCAR-ready is $1,195 for one week and $2,990 for two.

How about a camp for the Harry Potter fanatic in your family – Hogwarts is calling.

Or, maybe your child is a real thrill seeker – there is a roller coaster camp just for them. This teen summer program travels around the U.S., taking kids to multiple amusement parks for $1,395 to $2,995.

While those mind-blowing camps are awesome, most parents aren't millionaires.

Closer to home, the Okanagan offers some pretty cool choices that are still a ton of fun and more budget friendly.

The budding scientist in your family may want to check out a number of summer camps put on through the Okanagan Science Centre in Vernon.

From Spies and Private Eyes, to Superscrubs: Vets and Doctors, and Candy Lab, there is something for every kid.

The young chef in your family might love the Camp OC Mini Chef Academy camp in Kelowna, while budding artists can get creative at the Mini Van Gogh Art Academy.

The thespian in your family can get their theatrical feet wet at the OC’s Acting Academy, while your little survivalist might enjoy Extreme Survivor Challenge camp.

In the South Okanagan, Skaha Adventures provides three-day rock climbing and rappel camps for those kids who love to shimmy up the jungle gym – or mountain.

If you want to learn all about summer camps and adventures offered throughout the Okanagan, you can check out Campapalooza next Saturday, May 30, at Okanagan College in Kelowna and Sunday, June 7 in Kamloops.
