Mussels, hotel on agenda

Penticton council will discuss adding a hotel to the Penticton Trade and Convention Centre complex at Monday's meeting.

The matter is under consideration because there have been conventions that haven't come to the city because of a lack of hotels, according to Mayor Andrew Jakubeit

"There have been people in the past kicking tires for a premium hotel in Penticton, so the intent is for a zoning amendment to allow for a hotel on the property," he said.

After the zoning amendment is introduced Monday, a date will be picked for a public hearing.

Once that has been approved it would move forward with expressions of interest.

"At the end of the day a hotel project has to work for us in the community and a developer," said Jakubeit.

Other agenda highlights include a staff recommendation that council endorse entering into the 2015-2019 stewardship agreement for the Rocky Mountain Ridged Mussel, as proposed by the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations.

The mussel is present in the area close to shore all along Three Mile Beach shoreline within the city. Careful management of this species and its habitat is needed to ensure long term, viable populations within this area as well throughout its Canadian range, according to staff.

Council will further look at a sport and event tourism agreement, asking that council approve the transfer of funds of $55,000 from the 2015 economic development budget to the Tourism Penticton Society, the 2015/2016 custom transit annual operating agreement and a title and injunctive notice for 2385 Barnes Street and 2360 Government Street.

Staff is also asking that council deny the request by Ecole Entre-Lacs to allow this school a contractual agreement for guaranteed usage of recreational facilities similar to the one offered to School District 67, and that council consider a community grant application from the school in the 2016 budget process.

A public hearing on the SS Sicamous Area Master plan will be held prior to the meeting.

Gerry Gilligan, a Penticton resident opposed to a day moorage dock that is part of the plan, is currently circulating a petition.

He will hold a rally on the steps of city hall at 5 p.m., Monday, prior to the meeting.
