Rail vote remains strong

Update: Friday's third advance poll in Carr's Landing for the Lake Country Okanagan Rail Corridor borrowing bylaw referendum resulted in 161 votes cast; and together with those cast Wednesday and Thursday, make a total of 1745 votes so far in the referendum.

Residents have two more days of advance voting.

Lake Country voters continue to come out in large numbers during advance polling in the district's rail corridor borrowing referendum.

During Thursday's second day of advance voting at the Oyama Community Hall, 531 voters cast their ballots. This is on top of 1,053 votes cast on the opening day of voting, Wednesday.

The 1,584 votes represent 17 per cent of the approximately 9,315 eligible Lake Country voters.

"It was terrific to have such a great turnout at both advance polls so far," said chief electoral officer Reyna Seabrook.

Voters in Lake Country are being asked to approve borrowing of up to $2.6 million to purchase half the 16 kilometres of the CN Rail corridor that runs through the municipality.

The referendum was made necessary after more than 10 per cent of eligible voters petitioned against the borrowing bylaw during an alternative approval process.

There are three more advance polling days leading up to general voting day.

These include:

  • Today, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Carr’s Landing Fire Hall
  • Monday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Okanagan Centre Community Hall
  • Tuesday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Lake Country Municipal Hall

General voting day is April 25, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the George Elliot Secondary School gym.

When arriving at polling stations, voters will be registered as electors by showing two pieces of identification.  The identification must prove the voter’s residency and identity, including one piece with a signature. Accepted identification includes:

  • B.C. driver’s license
  • B.C. identification card
  • ICBC certificate of insurance
  • Social Insurance Number card
  • Citizenship card
  • Credit or debit card
  • Current utility bill (with address)

Non-resident property electors will need identification proving identity and proof of sole or joint ownership of property in Lake Country.
