3 injured saving a life

Update – 8 p.m.

It has been learned that the woman who set herself on fire has succumbed to her injuries.

Original story – March 31

Three firefighters were taken to hospital after attending a traumatic situation.

According to Kamloops Fire Department Capt. Darryl Cooper, firefighters were called to a medical response at Riverside Park about 2:15 a.m. Tuesday. However, when crews arrived, they discovered a woman who had set herself on fire in an apparent suicide attempt.

“It was very unexpected. We did not know that there was a person on fire,” said Cooper. “I overheard one of our guys say this was one of the most traumatic calls he’s seen in his career.”

The woman had wedged herself between two boulders on the west side of Riverside Park before setting herself ablaze. RCMP were in the process of using a fire extinguisher when crews arrived.

“The firefighters inhaled smoke and dry chemical from the extinguisher and had to be taken to hospital,” said Cooper.

All three of the firefighters are reported to be in good condition and are expected back on the job later today. They were able to save the woman’s life, and she was rushed to hospital with serious injuries.
