Recycling fees going down

The fee Kelowna residents pay for solid waste management is going down.

Council gave final approval Monday to a $35 reduction.

The reduction is possible because of a higher price for recycled materials since Multi Material BC took responsibility of residential recycling in May of last year.

"As part of the 2015 provisional budget, council approved the ... MMBC recycling program parcel tax reduction, which reduces the solid waste reduction service fee by $35 for each individual residential dwelling," said spokesman Darryl Astofooroff.

While residents will receive a break on their tax bill, Coun. Gail Given wondered if there is a chance rates could rise again if these kinds of revenues don't last.

Civic operations director Joe Creron admitted, while that is a possibility, the program seems to be successful.

"We really like it in Kelowna because we're making money," said Creron.

"I'm aware of that, and that's why I'm worried that the rates they (MMBC) are paying us might go down," added Given.

She wondered if there is enough room left in case the fees MMBC pays level off.

"It was hard for us, but at the end of the day it is the taxpayers' money, and we thought we should give it back to them because that was part of the deal," said Creron.

"We said to council at budget there was some risk."
