Drugs, beatings and crashes

Lumby RCMP responded to a call about an "unsecured" residence on Grandview Avenue, Friday.

When police attended, it was discovered it was in fact a “grow rip.”

The tenant had a legal licence to grow marijuana, and that was the sole purpose the home was broken into.

It appears the theft took place the night before and the tenant was not home.

The thieves forced their way into the residence, stole the plants and caused significant damage.

The Lumby detachment responded to 40 complaints during the past two weeks. Some of the other notable events were:

— Police attended to a single-vehicle accident on Highway 6 near Frank's Store in Cherryville, Thursday at 10 p.m.  A 39-year-old Lumby resident had rolled his truck and, after being removed by fire crews, became combative with ambulance staff.

He was transported to Vernon Jubilee Hospital, where he was combative with staff there as well. The man had to be restrained to be properly medically assessed.

Police obtained a search warrant to get a blood sample, to determine if charges of impaired driving will be laid.

— On March 16, a man was surrounded and assaulted by youths in Lumby.

The victim is a patient at Monashee Mews, a complex care facility. He was at a bus stop on Norris Road when he was approached by several males who exited a four-door, older white car and started punching and kicking him.

The assault was witnessed by a staff member from the home.

The victim had no visible bruises or injuries, however the motive remains unknown. The suspects were described as older teens, one wearing a blue and the other a red jacket.

Anyone with information is asked to call Lumby RCMP or CrimeStoppers.

— A search warrant was executed March March 17 for theft of electricity in the area of North Fork Road in Cherryville.

Police were aware the tenants were legally growing some 1,200 marijuana plants, but they were using stolen electricity to power the grow operation. A man was arrested on scene, transported to Vernon cells and will be charged for the theft under the Criminal Code.

All the plants and grow operation equipment in the home and outbuildings were seized by police.
