BMX track relocation

Penticton area BMX riders may get a new facility to practice and compete in.

Penticton Council  approved the concept, Monday, of relocating the Penticton BMX Club amenities from Lions Park to 630 Munson Mountain Road.

"Munson Mountain will allow the BMX club to expand membership, host races and events and create synergies with PACA to create a mountain bike skills training centre," said Mayor Andrew Jakubeit. "This would be a step forward in improving sport tourism, outdoor adventure and community enhancements.

We've been branding ourselves as a cycling precinct, and we need to continue to create amenities for road, mountain and recreational cycling with engaged community groups."

Representatives from the Penticton BMX Club gave a presentation during a January meeting of Committee of the Whole about expansion/relocation needs for the club, as the Lions Park facility was too small to hold larger provincial- and national-scale events.

The club had indicated they have funds, donors and suppliers available to make the project a reality.

Through discussions with staff, 630 Munson Mountain Road was identified as the ideal location.

The area is part of the Agricultural Land Reserve, which was previously approved for park and and recreation (ball fields), the mayor said. So the proposal will still require the Agricultural Land Commission to permit use and public process for approval.

Possible drawbacks include the site not being as accessible as other short listed sites. But it is not considered remote.

The Cemetery Master Plan has also identified this land as a potential future cemetery site beyond 2040.
