Left lane hogs beware

If you're one of those drivers who hog the left hand lane on B.C. highways, you're being put on notice.

The government is coming after you.

Transportation Minister Todd Stone told reporters outside the legislature Tuesday he intends to introduce legislation later this spring to crack down on "left-lane hogs."

“One of the key things that we heard from British Columbians all over the province was this frustration related to left-lane hogs, people who tend to camp out in that lane and seem to think that the left lane and the right lane are there to serve the same purposes. They’re not,” Stone told CTV News Tuesday.

While he wouldn't get into specifics as to what the legislation might look like, he did say the province intends to look at what is working in other parts of the country.

Stone did say the government is considering adding more signs on B.C. highways, asking drivers to move to the right except to pass.

“The challenge is that a lot of British Columbians don’t seem to know that and don’t seem to respect that requirement,” he said.

In at least one other province, it is illegal for motorists to drive in the left lane except to pass.
