Kids may have killed rabbit

Update March 9:

The mother of the child, whose rabbit was killed in Beaverdell, contacted Castanet to say the community is working together on this issue.

She says the her daughter is not receiving counseling, but she did receive letters, from those who may have been involved, apologizing and offering condolences.

The woman, who did not give her name, says the incident has been hard on the community as Beaverdell is small and most people know each other, however everyone is now putting their best foot forward on the matter.

A resident of Beaverdell is raising concern after she says a rabbit was brutally killed by children.

Audrey Laville contacted Castanet to say a young girl and her mother came into the library where Laville volunteers, and the two were crying because their pet rabbit had been stolen from a backyard enclosure and killed.

The RCMP and SPCA confirm they were both called to Beaverdell to investigate the matter, and that a rabbit had indeed been killed by humans.

Staff Sgt. Harrison of the Midway RCMP says he cannot comment further on what happened to the rabbit or the manner in which it died, as the alleged suspects are a group of children under 12.

“We received a report, it was investigated. It did occur, and we have referred the matter to the appropriate agency to look a little further because we are dealing with children,” he says.

Harrison goes on to say any child under the age of 12 doesn’t fall under the Young Offenders Act or the Criminal Code, so police will not be taking action.

However, Laville is concerned for other pets in the neighbourhood after hearing rumours this group wanted to harm again.

"We are pretty much being held enslaved by three small children," she claims.

As for the child who owned the bunny, she is receiving care from victim services and is traumatized after losing her pet.
