Special teams sink Rockets

The Kelowna Rockets squandered eight power-play chances Wednesday during a 2-1 shootout loss to the Edmonton Oil Kings.

It was game two of the Rockets four game Central Division road trip.

Tied 1-1 midway through the middle frame the reigning Western Hokey League champion Oil Kings unraveled, taking seven straight minor penalties over the course of the final 27 minutes of regulation time.

The Rockets were unable to capitalize on any of their opportunities setting up overtime and eventually the shootout.

Brett Pollock and Lane Bauer with the winner scored in the shootout. Nick Merkley scored the lone goal for the Rockets in the shootout.

Defenceman Joe Gatenby scored his first regular season goal in 85 Western Hockey League games giving the Rockets a 1-0 lead.

Dysin Mayo tied it on an Edmonton power-play six minutes into the second.

The Rockets were 0-8 with the man advantage while Edmonton went 1-3 on the power-play.

Jake Morrissey was solid in a losing effort stopping 31 of 32 shots he faced including three in overtime.

Tristan Jarry, the game's first star, turned aside 35 shots including 25 over the final 40 minutes.

The Rockets get Thursday off before continuing their road trip in Lethbridge Friday and Kootenay Saturday.

They don't play at home until a week Friday when they host Kamloops in the first of a home-and-home series.
