Warriors fall to open 2nd half

The West Kelowna Warriors got off to a rough start as they opened the unofficial second half of the BC Hockey League season Sunday night in Trail.

The lone bright spot in a 7-3 setback to the Smoke Eaters was the first career BCHL goal from defenceman Kyle Marino.

Marino opened the scoring as the Warriors took a 1-0 lead into the dressing room after 20 minutes but it was all Smokies from there.

Trail didn't waste any time in the middle frame as just 1:17 into the period Charlie Zuccharini flew into the zone, dangled to the backhand and beat Michael Lenko who was making his 3rd start for the Warriors this year.

The Smoke Eaters got another one 45 seconds later as Connor Brown-Maloski put a bouncing puck over the line to make it 2-1 Trail.

West Kelowna got that one back at 3:07 when Kylar Hope got his eighth of the season on a deflection on a nice two-on-one with Liam Blackburn.

The Trail power-play clocked twice late in the frame when Scott Davidson scored a pair of goals in the final 5:04 of the middle frame to make it 4-2 Trail after 40.

The Warriors cut the deficit to one early in the third when Jason Cotton scored a power-play goal, but an unfortunate break five minutes later lead to Max Newton restoring a two goal lead.

Trail adde a pair down the stretch as Zuccarini got his second of the night, and Harlan Orr scored shorthanded.

The Warriors will get a chance to even the score on home ice when the two teams hook up again Tuesday night at Royal LePage Place.
