An infant is in stable condition in a Victoria hospital after being mauled by a long-time family pet on Sunday, according to police.

CTV Vancouver reports the two-week-old Saanich child suffered “significant facial and head injuries” in the attack, which happened early Sunday morning.

Saanich Police say the dog, a pit bull/Rottweiler cross, was a family pet of 17 years. It has since been euthanized with the family’s consent.

Officials called the attack an “unfortunate tragedy.” Details of what led to the mauling are unclear.

Police say child and family services has been contacted.
