Preventing sidewalk slips

The City of Vernon is trying something new this winter, and they hope residents will help out and spread the news.

It’s a one-year pilot program aimed at improving sidewalk safety and assisting pedestrians during the winter months.

There will be 10 yellow grit boxes in key locations around the city. Each box will contain the same stuff used by the City’s snow removal staff on icy paths for roads and sidewalks and are designed for do-it-yourself access.

Pedestrians will be encouraged to spread the grit onto the sidewalks to make walking safer for everyone.

Most of the boxes will be located near the Schubert Centre downtown, with locations designated by proximity to steep hills or areas with frequent foot traffic.

Anyone can open the lid and spread the grit over ice or other problem areas using the scoop inside.

Vernon is the second city in BC to try this idea, following a successful two-year pilot project in Revelstoke.

Funding for the project was provided by a grant from Municipal Insurance Association.
