The Westside Warriors and the Kelowna 18+ Open Ringette team faced off in an icy ringette showdown at Rutland Arena Sunday afternoon.
More than 500 people filled the stands at Rutland Arena for the event which has been dubbed the Shutout Sports Challenge Cup. The game even comes with a trophy created and donated by Alex Draper of Shutout Sports Collectibles in Kelowna.
Although the women seemed to have better overall control of the ring, possession was even in the first period and the Warriors took an early lead about four minutes into the game.
Not even one minute later the girls scored to tie it up. By the end of the first period the Warriors had taken a stronger lead, leaving it 2-4 at the buzzer.
"Today is RBC Sports Day in Canada, so Kelowna Ringette and the West Kelowna Warriors just wanted to partner up and celebrate sport in the Okanagan," said Kelowna Ringette president Melissa Elsom. "This is the first annual game for us but we're going to make it a yearly event."
Elsom got the idea after a media game between some Warriors and ringette players last year.
Admission to the game was free with a non-perishable food item for the Kelowna Foodbank.
"We wanted to make it free and accessible for everybody in the community to come and we just thought we'd put our support behind something, especially this time of year," Elsom said.
The day is all about celebrating sport, promoting ringette and bringing two favoured ice sports to the arena at one time.
