Local kids compete on Disney

Disney hosted an open casting call at various locations across the country this summer, looking for eight kids to compete in their new Survivor type adventure show.

Thousands answered the call, all vying to form teams of two to compete in the Grizzly Cup – but only one group from Western Canada was selected.

Mia, 13, and Tobin, 11, hail from Kelowna and are siblings on Team Red. They competed last month against two other teams from Ontario and one from Manitoba.

The show pits the teams against each other in outdoor athletic competitions. Their father, Michael Woodworth, says the kids had a great time during the shooting of the show in Muskoka, Ontario.

“They absolutely loved it,” says Woodworth, adding it was something they’ll remember for the rest of their lives.

“They’re still in contact with the other teams, I mean literally there were tears. Regardless if teams were out or not, all the parents and everyone was there the entire time.”

Woodworth is not allowed to say how his children fared in the competition, but says he was surprised to even find out they had been chosen in the first place.

“They went through a kind of timed race, with different obstacles and challenges, and then they were interviewed on camera for a few minutes,” he says.

“I guess there’s ten locations across Canada and around 2,000 teams tried out…  and we kind of heard some of those details after the fact and pretty much just forgot about it.”

But the kids were chosen, and both say it was a great experience traveling to Ontario where all of the participants soon became friends.

"At the beginning we didn’t really know each other, and then towards it was like we were family," says Mia.

“If (the other teams) won the challenges, or whatever the outcome was, we were all happy for each other."

They are not allowed to say what types of challenges or tasks they had to complete, but Tobin says he was acquainted with most of them.

“We travel a lot and like to do lots of activities, so some of the stuff was familiar, but lots of it was new.”

The brother and sister duo were also forced to camp outside during the filming of the show, which added to the wilderness aspect of the series.

And both kids say they'll be watching when the show premiers Tuesday, Nov. 4 at 4 p.m. PST.
