Heightened security at YLW

You'll notice an increased level of security at Kelowna International Airport as a result of events in Ottawa Wednesday and an incident in Montreal on Monday, that left two members of Canada's military dead.

"In light of the two recent incidents we have enhanced our security patrols around the airport. As well, we have increased our RCMP presence," says airport communication director, Janelle Hynes.

"Under the direction of Transport Canada the public will see an increased vigilance through all modes of public transportation."

This would include airports, bus terminals, rail stations and ship and ferry terminals.

While security is always tight at Kelowna International, Hynes says it will be more visible.

"We know we are at an increased security risk. We have gone from low to medium.

Security is always the number one priority, it's just not as obvious as what it might be now. That's for that sense of security and public confidence."

Meantime, it's business as usual as City Hall.

City Manager, Ron Mattiussi, says this week's events will not prompt an increase in security at City Hall.

He says the city has performed security audits that did result in some changes during the latest round of renovations to the fourth floor which houses the mayor's office and other city staff.

"Some of the changes we made to the fourth floor were a direct result of looking at our security. You used to be able to walk right into the mayor's office," says Mattiussi.

Now, those offices are behind a locked door and a reception desk.

"We take it serious but it's always about controlled response. We do live in a society that, as Canadians, we value that. I think those precautions have to be measured and have to be realistic so we don't lose that."

At the RCMP Detachment, Cst. Kris Clark would only say RCMP are constantly monitoring activity across the province.

In a statement, Clark says...

"We, along with our law enforcement partners are continually assessing potential threats in BC and adjusting the security needs accordingly. We take reports of violence and threats seriously and will be responding accordingly."
