Documentary weekend

Connectivity is the theme uniting a stellar program of films for the third edition of the We Love Documentary weekend at the Shatford Centre of the Okanagan School of the Arts.

Running from October 17 to 19, the line-up was handpicked by Pepita Ferrari, National Chair of the Documentary Organization of Canada, who, along with Mandy Leith of Open Cinema and Connect the Docs, will each add a master class to the weekend’s offerings.

“This year’s program highlights what unites us as human beings in these challenging times in which we’re living. Each one of the films leaves the audience with a gift of some kind that they can take back and apply to their own lives - whether it’s the incredible ability of music to re-activate the brain as we see in 2014 Sundance Audience Award winner "Alive Inside" from Michael Rossato-Bennett, or the intergenerational magic that happens in Saffron Cassaday’s "Cyber Seniors" or how we can better manage our attitude towards food that we learn in Grant Baldwin’s "Just Eat It: A Food Waste Story" that just this week won both the VIFF Impact Award and the Audience Must See Award at the Vancouver International Film Festival,” said Ferrari.

Also on the program is Tim Cawley’s "From Nothing, Something" that explores the mysteries of the creative process as seen through the eyes of various designers and artists, including Sara Quinn of the successful musical group Tegan & Sara and an up-close and personal look at marriage in 112 Weddings directed by Doug Block.

Closing the weekend of screenings is the very moving and inspiring "Walking the Camino: Six Ways to Santiago" from director/producer Lydia B. Smith who accompanies six pilgrims as they take on the challenges of the 1200 year-old Camino de Santiago trail.

Post-screening special guests will be the order of the day, including a surprise musical event to close the opening night projection of Alive Inside and real life accounts from local people who have taken on the demanding personal challenge in the closing documentary, Walking the Camino: Six Ways to Santiago.

Showing how effective a tool documentary is when it comes to community engagement, the screening of Cyber Seniors will close with a discussion on how the Shatford Centre will start up their own group.

For documentary lovers wanting an inside look at what’s going on these days with the genre Ferrari offers a Master Class on Saturday, Documentary Storytelling in an Age of Information Overload and for local artists and entrepreneurs looking to see how they can maximize their web presence, Mandy Leith offers a Master Class on Sunday,Using Social Media to Share your Story and Reach your Peeps.

“The Okanagan School of the Arts is very excited to have Pepita and Mandy return to the Shatford Centre for this third edition of the We Love Documentary Film weekend. Pepita is much in demand as a workshop and master class leader and has put together a full and intense documentary experience with her choice of films. Mandy’s national journey, with the Get on the Bus Doc Tour she did last year and her Open Cinema concept in Victoria makes her ideal to share her expertise about social media,” says Jane Shaak, Executive Director of the Shatford Centre.
