Power outage pastimes

As 22,000 residents from West Kelowna to Summerland enter the third hour of a power outage, residents are sharing how they are passing the time with the lights out!

Some are enjoying the power outage in style, with a generator.

“I've been checking your website for updates on the situation. We have our generator going with a couple spot lights in the house and a cord to our TV with an Xbox set up to watch a couple of movies while the power is out,” shares Lachlan Gibbings.

“12 volt battery, a power inverter and a portable DVD player with Horrible Bosses playing. That's how we're rocking the outage
:-)” says Chris Soper.

Others are enjoying the old school way of sitting through a power outage, no electricity needed!

“Candles and listening to pre-recorded old radio shows,” shared one resident.

While 6-year-old Clara Mills (pictured above) is rediscovering she has physical toys, via headlamp, without video games to distract her.

Her dad Randy says they have a AAA radio cranking out the tunes, connected to mini speakers…while the batteries last.

Katie’s family chose to enjoy another before video games existed idea, playing hide-and-go-seek in the dark.

Cindy Henderson also has the radio on listening to the Kelowna Rocket's game.

"I'm sitting with my dog watching traffic backed up on the bridge, listening to Rockets game on an old battery powered alarm clock radio and reading Harry Potter!"

Ashley Stone says they are kickin' it old school with a kerosene lamp and candles.

She’s hoping the power will come on soon though, as she doesn’t want it to get too cold for their 10-month-old baby.

“It's a good reminder to build a little emergency kit with candles and flashlights that's for sure!” says Stone.

Sharon Peterson went out for a walk and checked on her elderly neighbours to make sure everyone was ok.

“A nice opportunity to catch up,” says Peterson.

Amy Talbot is a nursing student and unfortunately power outage or not she has to study. (pictured to the left)

Drinks in hand Bruce Baydala says he is enjoying the view.

“Music via Bluetooth speaker, guitar, cocktails and a view of the city. Life is good,” writes Baydala.

Neighbours Pub is staying open and entertaining their guests via candlelight.

“Here at the Muster station, also know as Neighbours Pub, we have busted out the guitar, started some classic acapella and lit every candle in house:) We are having a time !!” shares Alix Genn.

Litia Wilson was in the midst of getting her hair done, foils in, and had to get inventive to finish the job.

“Few foils in and the power goes out! It's dark outside by this time so we take everything outside and pull the car up by the deck with the lights on and music blaring from our phones,” says Wilson.

On the other hand Jonas Gerzen got out of dodge and says he’s spending time on the lit side of the bridge.
