The Kelowna Fire Dept. responded to a 911 call of a fire on a balcony at the Executive House at 737 Leon Avenue just before midnight Monday.
A passerby notice flickering light and called it in; when crews arrived they discovered a small fire in a garbage can on the 10th floor.
The fire was extinguished before it extended into the residence.
It is believed the fire was started by a smoker who discarded a still burning cigarette butt in the trash, subsequently causing the plastic garbage can to catch on fire.
Responding to the call were: three engines, one rescue vehicle, one command vehicle and a safety unit along with 17 personnel.
The Kelowna fire department would like to remind all residents that it’s time to test and replace the batteries in your smoke alarms.
