No cellphone ticket spike

A campaign by North Okanagan RCMP to catch drivers breaking the rules found a surprising twist on the norm.

Of the 83-violation tickets issued during the one day enforcement blitz, 58 of them were for not wearing a seatbelt while only 14 were for use of a cellphone (whether talking or texting).

“I would have thought there would be a higher number of cellphone violations than seat belts absolutely,” says RCMP spokesman Gord Molendyk. “I am quite surprised at that number after all these years and campaigns.”

During the entire operation four officers from the North Okanagan Traffic Services unit and the Integrated Road Safety Unit conducted various standing and roving cell phone and seatbelt checks in Vernon, from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

As noted,a total of 83 Violation Tickets were issued, over $10,000 in fines, which included;

  • 14 for use of a cell phone - $167 fine
  • 58 for not wearing a seatbelt - $167 fine.
  • Four for failing to stop at a stop sign
  • Seven other assorted tickets
