Rifle stolen from truck

North Okanagan RCMP are reminding gun owners to store their firearms properly after a rifle was stolen from a truck in Enderby.

Early Sunday morning Enderby RCMP responded to a report of a theft from a vehicle in the area of George Street and Regent Avenue.

“The owner reported his truck had been broken into overnight, and his rifle, a 308 Browning Rifle with Leopold VX Scope in a soft case was stolen,” explains RCMP spokesman Gord Molendyk.

RCMP are warning gun owners that it is on them to store their firearms properly.

Molendyk says if a firearm is left in a vehicle in plain sight, even with a trigger lock, it is illegal and if you are caught you can be charged under the criminal code.

“First of all, it could land in the wrong hands and secondly it is illegal to leave them,” adds Molendyk. “Quite often hunters will go into the bush area with two or three different firearms. Often the ones not being used are left on the seat or left in the vehicle in plain sight, that is illegal. It must be stored or hidden properly within the vehicle.”
