Eagle rescued at sea

A young eagle is fighting for its life after he was found floating off Vancouver Island.

CTV Vancouver reports that a fisherman off Nanoose Bay found the eagle in distress and came to its rescue. He caught the eagle and the whole rescue on video.

“It looked like he was probably going to drown if I didn't step in,” explains rescuer Don Dunbar.

The fisherman was able to actually convince the eagle to get near the boat at which point he scooped him up with his fishing net and got him back on dry land.

The fisherman says the eagle was obviously trying to fly, but could not get out of the water.

The eagle is now being taken care of by Orphaned Wildlife Rehabilitation Society (OWL) trying to bring him back to health.

Mindy Dick from OWL says they are concerned he may have swallowed something like a fish hook. She says some days the eagle is doing great and some days he is still struggling.

The eagle is currently about half the weight he should be for his age. Everyday it is touch and go for the bird of prey.

If he recovers he will be released back at Nanoose Bay.

"Hopefully I will be able to attend that and wave him goodbye,” adds Dunbar.
