Mail theft

Three postal relay boxes in the Glenmore area were hit by thieves earlier this week.

A media relations official with Canada Post in Ottawa says, "We can confirm there was an incident involving a mail theft earlier in the week. Our team of postal inspectors are working with local law enforcement to find the offenders, ensuring the mail is safe and secure."

"In the meantime we are in the process of alerting our affected customers to check their regular mailers about any important items they were expecting at the time."

Cst. Kris Clark, says a letter carrier's bag which contained a key to the relay boxes was stolen Friday.

Very little mail was taken during the initial incident.

Clark says the carrier had put the bag down for a moment when two males on bikes wearing hoodies rode up and stole the bag.

He says thieves likely gained access to the relay boxes Monday using the stolen keys.

The affected boxes are in the Smithson, Glenburn and Sonora areas of old Glenmore.

Officials with the corporation would not say whether it was residential or business customers that were affected, however, the area in question is mainly residential. The postal official also did not comment on why the locks were not changed once they knew the keys were missing.
