Royalty visits local wineries

His Royal Highness, the Earl of Wessex, made a brief visit to Kelowna Tuesday to recognize our regional forest fire fighters.

The Earl, Prince Edward, was greeted at the winery by Minister Steven Thomson, Lieutenant Governor Judith Guichon and the von Mandl family, along with dozens of fire fighters and other guests.

The Earl did not speak officially at the event but spent time shaking hands and sharing stories with local firefighters.

After some welcoming remarks and personal fire stories from Thomson, Guichon and Mrs. von Mandl the whole crowd was treated to a live helicopter Rapattack demo from the forest fire fighters.

The Earl’s wife, Her Royal Highness, the Princess Edward Countess of Wessex was also in Kelowna Tuesday at the von Mandl’s flagship winery, Mission Hill.

The countess, along with proprietor Anthony von Mandl presented 22 Duke of Edinburgh’s Awards to BC and Alberta youth.
