Shingle Creek wildfire

UPDATE 7:30 P.M.

Fire crews hit a small wildfire on Green Mountain Road hard Monday afternoon.

Fire Information Officer, Kayla Pepper, says the fire has grown to between 10 and 15 hectares, however, it is showing only rank 1 and rank 2 activity.

Twenty-eight ground personnel, two tankers and a helicopter actioned the fire.

Air crews have stopped for the night but are expected to return if needed Tuesday.

UPDATE 5:00 P.M.

The Shingle Creek Wildfire off Green Mountain Road is now 10 hectares in size, but is slowing down.

Fire Information Officer Kayla Pepper says the fire has eased to a Rank 2 and is showing less signs of aggression, such as tree candling.

Air-tankers, helicopters and ground crews are battling the blaze.

UPDATE 4:45 P.M.

RCMP at the scene have shut down Green Mountain Road to everyone but local traffic while crews battle the blaze.

Police officers have warned local residents about the fire but as it stands no evacuation alerts have been given.

Castanet reporter Deborah Pfeiffer, who is on the scene, says it appears to be burning up on the hillside, across from homes on the opposite side of the road.

The Penticton Indian Band Fire Department, forestry officials, RCMP and ambulance are on the scene.

A tanker and helicopter are also fighting the blaze from the air.

We will have more information as it becomes available.

“It is burning quite vigorously. There are nine personnel responding, as well air-tankers and heli-tankers have been requested,” says Pepper.

The fire is in the same area as the large Apex Mountain fire earlier this summer.

The cause of the fire is unknown and details at this time are few. Castanet has a reporter headed to the scene.
