Puppy attacked at park

Chad Smith is making a desperate plea to the public to find a man and his German Shepherd.

The dog allegedly attacked Smith’s friend’s 15-week-old Labradoodle on Sunday near Waterfront Park.

“My friend’s seven-year-old daughter was walking the dog along near Waterpark and the German Shepherd was kind of lying in the grass, and saw the little puppy, lunged at her and grabbed her by the head and wrung her all around.”

The attack caused the puppy to suffer a broken jaw, plus several broken facial bones, the injuries were apparently so severe that the Labradoodle had to be transported to Metro Vancouver for surgery.

“Meanwhile the seven-year-old is standing there holding the leash, watching her dog get ripped apart,” explains Smith.

The dog was apparently off leash and the owner was not in sight at the time of the incident.

“My friend went over grabbed his daughter and the dog, while some bystanders threw a towel over the German Shepherd,” he says. “That is when the owner came over and yelled, ‘you aren’t going to take my dog,’ and took off.”

Smith says the man was wearing dark clothing continued on bike with his dog off leash toward the downtown past Roses. A security camera caught footage of the man on his bike in the parking lot of the waterfront boat launch.

“This was a total unprovoked attack,” exclaims Smith, who fears the dog may have turned on the child had his friend not been there to step in.

The dog survived surgery and is coming home from Vancouver, but the prognosis is yet to be seen.

“It’s head is all wrapped up and it has to be feed through a tube for the next several weeks.”

The puppy’s owners did have pet insurance which covered the cost of the surgery, so the family is not looking for compensation.

However they believe this German Shepherd is dangerous and needs to be assessed by dog control.
