ALS ice bucket challenge?

Penticton Mayor Garry Litke took part in the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge in front of city hall Wednesday afternoon.

A Penticton firefighter poured the ice water on the mayor's head, as an enthusiastic crowd looked on.

"The ice bucket challenge is sweeping across North America, all on Facebook, to raise money for ALS," he said. "It has been working in the U.S., but in Canada the fund-raising has been stalling, with people taking the challenge, then not paying up. So my intention today is to raise money and awareness of the need for money for ALS research."

The mayor said reporter Joe Fries with the Penticton Western News challenged him that morning to have the bucket of ice poured on him, and he accepted. Fries took the challenge earlier in the day.

Fries said he chose to do it because it is a good cause. He challenged Litke and also MLA Dan Ashton, who is out of town, because they are community leaders who should be out in front in these things. He added that he also picked them because he never sees them with a hair out of place.

A fireman's helmet will be at City Hall for the rest of the week for anyone who wants to make a donation or to find our more about donating go to the ALS Canada website.
