2-month-old Kit is currently available for adoption from the Vernon shelter

The goal of the BC SPCA is to find a home for every adoptable animal in the province.

Through mandatory spaying and neutering of animals adopted from BC shelters, subsidized spaying and neutering for people experiencing financial hardship, and through school programs and public education, a difference is being made.

In just 7 years, one unspayed cat and her offspring can produce over 450,000 cats, with an average litter of three kittens twice a year.

At the Vernon & District BC SPCA a partnership is being set up with the Creekside Animal Clinic to offer spay and neuter assistance for cats to 20 qualified low-income families in the month of September.

Branch Manager Chelsea Taylor says the shelter is trying to get the word out to families and hopes many will take up the offer.

“Currently it's a one-time deal, but if successful we're hoping to secure funding to make it ongoing,” she says.

Families must have proof of income, a healthy cat under the age of six years and a proper crate to transport the animal in. Crates are available by donation at the Vernon SPCA if needed.
