Standing up for Israel?

Close to a dozen people held signs and generated support outside of Christy Clark’s MLA office in West Kelowna on Friday, outraged over her recent comments on the fighting in Gaza.

Many of the protesters were part of the Kelowna Peace Group, who took issue with Clark’s support of Israel last week in a letter to a Jewish-Canadian advocacy group in which she says the province can be "counted as a friend."

“(It’s) at a time when people are being massacred by the Israeli army, so we thought this was outrageous,” says group organizer Anne-Marie Brun.

“We’re calling the leaders of the world community to call for a ceasefire. But also under the conditions that the siege of Gaza is going to end, that there’s going to be serious talk about that."

She feels the message being sent by Prime Minister Stephen Harper and BC Premier Christy Clark is that Canada is supporting Israel in this war, but that is not the case in all communities.

“We don’t want, as Canadians and as British Columbians, to be seen as supporting a regime which is not democratic and is not respecting human rights.”

One of the Palestinian protesters who took part in the rally was Hassan Abbas, who was born in Haifa, but has lived in Canada since 1965.

He feels there will be no peace until the United States presses Israel to comply with resolutions brought forward by the United Nations.

“If you are cornered, you have to defend yourself. What can you do?,” he asks.

“For seven years they have been isolated inside the Gaza Strip with no water, no electricity, no food, what can you do?”

The group also delivered a letter to Christy Clark’s office, but she was not there to receive it.
