Yacht club readies sails

The new Kelowna Yacht Club is nearing completion.

Officials with the club expect the new 24,100 square foot, two storey building, to officially open mid September.

A majority of the construction has been complete with mainly cosmetic items left to be finished.

Officials expect to be able to begin moving offices from the current location to the new building within the next few weeks.

The new yacht club will open to members prior to the official grand opening.

Construction on the final piece of the building, the Cactus Club Restaurant, will begin once the yacht club has officially opened.

The public restaurant is expected to open in early spring next year.

Meantime, the promenade, closed between the ice rink and the boat launch since mid January, re-opened Wednesday.

The walkway was closed for habitat enhancements along the lakeshore and reconstruction of the waterfront promenade.

It's part of Phase 2 of Stuart Park which, when complete, will provide 300 metres of prime downtown waterfront access for visitors and residents.

Phase 2 will also include green space on the site of the current yacht club and the parking lot.

That work was scheduled for completion by November, however, delays in completion of the new yacht club will likely push that to the spring of next year.

City officials say it will take about two months to completely demolish the yacht club building once it is vacated because of the hazardous materials inside the building that will take time to remove and dispose of.

That would take demolition into late October or early November.
