Hopkin not seeking re-election

Penticton councillor Wes Hopkin has announced he will not be seeking re-election in the fall.

Hopkin will instead be attending law school at the University of Toronto, he said in his resignation announcement.

"As my program begins before my term is completed, I will be resigning my position on council effective Aug. 8," he said.

Hopkin added, he will provide a more formal statement after his last council meeting on Aug. 5.

Hopkin was elected to council in November of 2011. Prior to that he graduated from Penticton Secondary School in 2007 and from Harvard in May of 2011 with a bachelor's degree in political science.

Hopkin, now 25, was the youngest councillor on this council and the youngest ever elected to council in Penticton.

He counts among the highlights of his time on council, being able to be a part of the process to revitalize the waterfront and downtown.

"Those investments in the community will last for several decades to come," he said.
