You may remember boring highschool lectures about Canadian History that felt like torture at the time, regardless of its importance.

Well a Kelowna company has developed a new app that is all about having fun and learning about our amazing country at the same time.

Local hot spots like the Myra Canyon Trestles and Pacific Spirit Regional Park can now be discovered on Explore150: a free mobile app giving its users a new reason to discover the country they live in while logging their travels along the way.

The app is free to download for iOS/Android devices and is the latest mobile app to come from the Kelowna based non-profit Get to Know through a special collaboration with TakingITGlobal.

If you are a younger reader you may ask how or why should you get excited about Canadian heritage.

While Get to Know says knowledge is power.

"In 2017 Canada hits its 150th anniversary (or sesquicentennial) and for the lead up, Explore150 provides a mobile peer-to-peer platform where young Canadians can share their experiences of the country’s natural, historical, and cultural heritage," says the company.

Explore150 is all about the tech savvy smart phone user. It will guide you to your nearest heritage site using GPS tracking.

When you're within 200 meters you can check-in, snap a pic to be featured in the photo spot and post a message in the digital guestbook.

Each step earns you points and those points can earn you prizes, including a trip to Montreal!

Explore150 is funded entirely by the Government of Canada through a $223,000 Youth Take Charge grant program.

"Our Government is proud to invest in projects that help youth experience history in meaningful and relevant ways. We are pleased to give young Canadians opportunities to connect with one another, learn new things about Canada and its history, and explore the diversity of our communities," shared Minister of Canadian Heritage, Shelly Glover.
