Tommy is a larger-than-life character. He is always the first one to talk to you in the morning, and loves trying to tell everyone how he feels throughout the day. Although Laboradors are typically only 'alarm barkers', Tommy's new guardian should be prepared for his regular stories. Tommy doesn't let his age get in the way of his life - he still has a spring to his step and an enthusiasm for life usually only seen with puppies. He is eager to please and loves to spend time with people, regardless of the activity. Due to his age, Tommy would not do well in a VERY active home, but the average household with regular walks would be his ideal retirement home. Overall, Tommy is friendly and affectionate, and would do well in a home where he can be spoiled with attention (not necessarily food, although he'll ask for it). Due to his age, it is very important his new guardians keep his lean-mean figure to help his joints. In addition, a veterinary diet with ingredients to help with mobility and arthritis is recommended. He does get excited, and will bark and may jump up, but Tommy is quite the gentleman overall - he walks on leash well, and will prance out on a walk like the most important person around. He does NOT do well with cats, and introductions to smaller dogs should be well controlled and positive. Tommy may get anxious when left alone for too long a period of time. He will need his new guardian to help him to get used to spending time alone slowly, for a few moments at a time, and gradually increasing in length. A behaviour counselling session with our Adoption Staff is necessary before adopting any animal.
